Ed Gein
Ed Gein was an American murderer and body snatcher that lived from August 27, 1906 to July 26, 1984. He cannot be considered a serial killer, by the traditional definition, because he was only accused of killing two women. Gein is known for digging up women’s graves in his hometown of Plainfield, Wisconsin and making household items, such as chair seats, lampshades, and bowls, out of their body parts.
Ed Gein was originally found unfit to stand trial; after being in a mental health facility, he was sentenced for life and put back into a mental hospital. “Due to prohibitive costs, Gein was tried for only one murder…” – Robert H. Gollmar (judge for Gein’s case). Gein’s story actually contributed to the creation of many fictional serial killers, the most famous being Jame Gumb (Buffalo Bill) from The Silence of the Lambs, Norman Bates from Psycho, and Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
